[The deepest madness…] and Other Poems

Translated from Russian by Philip Metres

[The deepest madness maintains…]

The deepest madness maintains
The face of complete mental health.
But, having gathered in bronzing sky,
Such a darkness falls, it won’t
Let me keep pretending.

On the sill, Kuzma the cat glowers
At the mouse-mysteries of the world.
All around, the alarm clock ticks loud,
Then goes quiet. Perhaps now
No one will wake in the morning.

In the glass over the polished desk,
I can see all the words
I’m to write, if I last the years.
If I remember the mysteries of others
And have the strength to forget myself.

[I can’t fall in love with movies…]

I can’t fall in love with movies
Because they’re all the same—
No matter how many you see,
Three riddles they contain.

I don’t need to explain them to you,
Already knowing by heart
Their scraggy catalogue of salt. Soot.
I’m fond of what burns so hot

Not even any ashes remain.
Why peer at that fake light
That splashes across the screen,
Driven by film or digit,

Like by an ox across the brain
Ploughed to mud? A director
Peeps in the tent at his naked father
Like Ham, points at his shame.

I’ll slide into a hidden dream
In which he cannot peer,
And repose in a tent of flame
Where I’m my own mirror.

[They’d be much more intelligible…]

They’d be much more intelligible
If they were woven into a pattern
More welcoming and pleasing to all—
My words beneath this lonely winter hat.
But this hat is multi-eared,
Whispering to me weird
And insensible words about
How to drink in the morning—not bright tea,
But a salty pale Talisker whiskey.

And the sky is terra firma, secluded,
Hardly separated from the field
In a daytime January shroud.
And the day is so unbearably short
And empty, though they say it’s growing.
And the night is boundless, sea-like,
Filled with dark waves,
We can’t swim across it alive—
Well, except in REM sleep.

There’s no smile in my verse.
Only the precise light of winter
In which everything appears to us.
But we’re melting, our dreams too.
What only will remain is her face—
An old woman’s prophetic gaze
As she places us in a canoe,
As to her ancient song she dances.
She and shore leap so quickly—into the distance—
