How to Dress for Your Urgent Care Visit

1. The fit must say, “I’m in pain, but still a problem.”

You want drama. Mystery. Hemorrhaging, but with highlighter. Choose something that whispers, I may have dislocated my shoulder doing intermediate yoga, but I still believe in color theory. The goal is subtle chaos. Like, I might faint, but I will do so in a coordinated set.

Bonus points for sweatpants that used to belong to your ex. They carry the right kind of baggage.

2. Layering is survival.

You will be cold. You will be hot. You will be cold again. You are the human embodiment of an HVAC malfunction. So, layer like your sanity depends on it. Because it does.

A hoodie you can cry into. A t-shirt you can spill apple juice on. An emergency tank top for when you’re forced to awkwardly strip down behind a paper curtain while maintaining eye contact with your own dignity.

3. Avoid jumpsuits at all costs.

You will be asked to pee in a cup. You will be forced to carry it. You will not want to do this while naked from the waist up, holding your bra in one hand and a Dixie cup of lukewarm self-loathing in the other.

4. Shoes are the forgotten frontier.

Choose slip-ons. Not lace-ups. This is not a time for humility or pride. This is a time for speed. You will be weighed, and the nurse will not wait while you untangle your Hoka knots.

Crocs are socially acceptable here. In fact, they’re encouraged. This is Croc country. Welcome.

5. Makeup or no makeup?

Trick question. The only makeup you need is the sweat-glow of anxiety and just enough mascara to smudge dramatically when the nurse asks you to rate your pain and you say “three” out of misguided stoicism even though you are actively seeing stars.

If you insist on glam, keep it waterproof and emotionally bulletproof.

6. Accessories matter.

Bring a tote bag. Not for essentials. Just to make it seem like you have a life outside of this linoleum purgatory. Bonus if it contains unrelated objects like a single ballet flat, unopened mail, and your childhood trauma.

A hair tie is nonnegotiable. You will need to give a urine sample, have your blood drawn, and possibly cry in the parking lot. All of these require clear sight lines.

7. Socks should be cute.

There’s a high chance you’ll end up sock-footed on a cold exam table covered in butcher paper. You will contemplate your mortality while a man named Craig palpates your spleen. The least you can do is make sure your socks have tiny frogs on them.

Final Notes
Do not wear anything with metal snaps. You will be x-rayed. You will forget. You will be forced to wear a paper vest that flaps like a broken sail in a fluorescent storm.

And remember. You’re not just here to get medical attention. You’re here to make an impression. You’re here to remind the world that pain is temporary, but style is eternal. Especially when paired with a wrist brace.

So, the next time you step into urgent care, do it like the medical runway diva you are. And if someone stares, just say, “It’s Dior, actually.”

Then ask them if the bathroom’s still out of order.
