In this house I watch the birds from my window,
the neighbor; she plays piano,
a mother does the dishes, the world is a
symphony & I only see birds,
My friends; they’ve had their first kisses & flings,
I learned how to make blood taste best when it’s hurting—
& that world out there, I don’t know
if I’ll ever see it, caught in the paradox of body
& mind,
But I want to, I want to see it, I want to dance
amongst crinolines in some fantastical halls, I want
to be it, I want Paris & India & Antarctica,
I want to pick up a globe & spin it just to pick
where to go,
I want to be her, cast spells with my mouth,
some rockstar,
I want to love her, I want love,
some fairytale, I want some illusion,
But peace is not real, & we are at war
in a distant land, in our own country the streets too
run red, some America,
& the birds outside my window, the ones
who dare each other to fly into my cat’s open jaw
they tell me peace is not real but
neither is hate
or love but we still sing for you, for this world,
do you still sing for us?
In this house I count the dust on my ceiling
&
wait for
it
to
fall.
Spread the Fire is a Youth Speaks workshop series facilitated by YS Poet Mentor, Hieu Minh Nguyen. The series aims to demystify the publishing side of poetry. In the workshop, poets learn how to refine and prepare their poems for publication. The fire you spit on stage, can also scorch the page. Burning down the borders between page and stage, poets learn how their poems can gain a new life by accessing a readership through publishing.
