Jessica Osorio grew up in San Francisco and graduated cum laude from Pomona College with a BA in English and a minor in Psychology. She comes to The Offing after working in publicity at W. W. Norton in New York City, where she represented numerous bestselling works of fiction and nonfiction. Just one New York winter was enough for Jessica; she has happily returned to California and now lives in Los Angeles.
What doors do you open at The Offing?
I work on publicity, events, and outreach for the Offing, which basically means that my job is to broaden our readership in several different ways. I work to make sure the world sees, reads, and talks about all of the brilliant, beautiful, and important work our team puts together — which is a particularly fun role to play because it’s often very easy to get people excited about what we’re doing here!
What doors does The Offing open for you?
The Offing came to me at such a great moment. I don’t think I even realized how much I needed to be a part of this work and this community until it became a huge part of my life.
The Offing gives me purpose. It fills my need to be a part of something creative, and it feels great to be creating something so meaningful and necessary.
The Offing also keeps me optimistic. The fact that it exists and has found such incredible success in such a short period of time makes me optimistic and hopeful that this industry really can and will change, and it’s starting right here.
What would you like to see us do with the donations we receive during our fundraiser?
So many things! It’s hard not to get too excited and ambitious when imagining the possibilities and future for The Offing. I want to reward our contributors and all of our editors who pour their time and energy into this work.
It would also be great to see the Offing in print (maybe just once a year), a collection of our very best work, something we can all hold and proudly display on our coffee tables and bookshelves.
And I would love to start planning events. I’d like to begin creating a physical space to complement the digital one we’ve already created, a place where we can all come together to meet and share ideas with one another. It would be so great to organize readings, conversations, and other events in various cities across the country where our readers and contributors and partners can all come together to make our community larger and stronger, and our voices louder.
