Cravings

Yesterday, I found you
in the bathroom eating apples
—it sounded like a wolf

crushing bones. I helped you
up and gnawed
what was left to the core.

I wondered if our son could hear
the rain drumming on the roof
or your heart thumping next door.

I swallowed it whole and a hedge burst from my breast, brambles grown thorny around my heart.
