After the Holocaust, I was Born

when snow gathered like a ghost on every windowsill / of course I couldn’t sleep / my father’s father, the original dead man / found me / he was all buttoned up & his pants past his hips, up to his chest / he’d be ugly if you didn’t know him / his face was always too round / not because of old age / maybe the death of his wife / maybe his own death / no one ever told me how he died / he was old / had a bum hip and everything / how do you ask something like that / tell me all the gore / the exact way it happened / I know it has something to do with me / what happened / like maybe I’ll die exactly like him / the truth fits somewhere in my chest like the lung I’m missing / but it’s been years now / we buried him.

when my grandmother sings

and my grandmother would hold /
out her hand to catch the dewdrops /
falling from the sky /
her voice was drowned out long ago
