Lotte Lehmann (1888–1976) was a renowned German-American soprano best known for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Celebrated for being as fine an actor as she was a singer, she is particularly well-remembered for her interpretation of the Marschallin in Strauss’s
Rosenkavalier—“a role she made synonymous with her name,” according to her
New York Times obituary. She was also the author of eight books, including
Verse in Prosa (Verlag Hugo Heller-Bukum AG, 1923), the collection of prose poems from which these translations are drawn.
